For 28 years, the NCBE has run practical workshops for teachers, school technicians and students.

LOCATION

Generally, courses are run on request, on location in your school or college. Most of our work is done in Great Britain, but we will also run workshops throughout the United Kingdom and continental Europe - and further afield.

COURSE CONTENT

We prefer to run workshops that are almost entirely practical, giving participants an opportunity to try things themselves. The content of the course is tailored to meet your requirements: there is little point in, for example, running an introduction to microbiology for trained microbiologists, or carrying out work with your students that you could easily organise yourself. Popular course subjects include: basic microbiology; enzyme technology; techniques of molecular biology; issues in human genetics.

NUMBER OF PARTICIPANTS

Because our courses are mainly practical, we prefer to limit the maximum number of participants to 24, working in pairs. However, we are sometimes asked to accommodate larger groups and for certain activities can deal with 30 or more participants.

COSTS

We try to keep our charges as low as possible. The basic charge for school courses for up to 24 school students is £900 (GBP) per day (that is, roughly £37.50 per student). This price includes: preparation and provision of materials and equipment; course literature; tuition; disposal and cleaning of used materials.

Note that the cost of travel and, where necessary, accommodation, is extra.

OUR REQUIREMENTS

These vary slightly according to the nature of the course. In general, we need: a suitable laboratory or work area; access to electricity, water (and sometimes gas). We require access to the laboratory at least one hour before the start of the course and because of the amount of equipment involved, easy access to the laboratory is desirable.
