This page describes several facets of gel electrophoresis, most of which are generally applicable, but some of which relate to the NCBE electrophoresis equipment. These include:

• the effect of voltage on gel electrophoresis;
• the effect of DNA fragment size on its migration through an agarose gel;
• the effect of agarose gel concentration on the movement of DNA fragments.

UNITS OF MEASUREMENT

Small volumes and masses, which may be unfamiliar to school-based biologists, are used throughout this booklet. This section explains what they are.There are also details of the fragment sizes in a common DNA 'ruler' or 'ladder'.
