Cellulase activity pack
When the enzyme cellulase is added to a viscous solution of soluble cellulose (CMC), the viscosity of the solution is dramatically reduced. This change in viscosity can readily be measured, by timing how long the solution takes to drain through a syringe barrel. If the CMC solution is made up using buffers of various pHs (e.g., pH 4, 7 and 9), the effect of pH on the enzyme’s activity can easily be investigated. This convenient pack contains cellulase, carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) and full range pH indicator. (The pH indicator is simply added to the various CMC solutions, to ‘colour-code’ them and avoid confusion.)
PACK CONTENTS
This pack contains 100 g of GPR Rectapur carboxymethylcellulose, 50 mL of Full range pH indicator and 100 mL of Novozymes Celluclast®. These items are also available individually.
ENZYME ACTIVITY
Celluclast® catalyses the breakdown of the glucose polymers that comprise cellulose to glucose, cellobiose (i.e., pairs of glucose units) and longer chains of glucose units. For practical purposes, the optimum conditions for activity of this enzyme preparation are in the range pH 4.5–6.0, and about 50–60 °C. For further details please refer to the data sheet provided with the enzyme preparation.
STORAGE
Generally at a storage temperature of 25 °C, you can expect the enzyme to maintain its declared activity for at least 3 months. At lower temperatures (5–10 °C), the shelf life is considerably increased. If stored correctly, the other items in the pack can be kept for many years.
