Microbiology: Resources for schools

The NCBE provides a carefully-selected range of items for practical microbiology.

MICROBIAL SLOPE CULTURES

The NCBE provides a limited range of cultures on slopes, generally for use with practical protocols that the centre has devised.

OYSTER MUSHROOM CULTURE

Grow oyster mushrooms on toilet rolls (or ‘bathroom stationery’ as we like to call it here). Great for primary school investigations.

BACTERIAL TRANSFORMATION KIT

A safe practical demonstration of genetic modification, with scope for open-ended investigations. Involves adding a gene encoding green fluorescent protein to bacterial cells.

ANTIBIOTIC PRODUCTION AND TEST CULTURES

Streptomycin was one of the first antibiotics to be used medically: it was the first effective cure for tuberculosis (TB). Streptomycin is produced by some strains of the bacterium Streptomyces griseus, which release the antibiotic into the surrounding growth medium. Streaks of other microbes can be placed on the plate to test which are sensitive to Streptomycin.

MICROBIAL FUEL CELL

Use baker’s yeast (or other yeasts) to generate electricity. Ideal for studies of respiration.

SYNTHETIC BIOLOGY KIT

An exciting kit allowing students to practically experience the world of synthetic biology. Choose whether to make red or green fluorescent bacteria, cut out the necessary gene and stick it into the appropriate plasmid then transform into bacteria. Watch them be amazed!
